Is the plundering of souls lawful in his presence?

    A gazelle-fawn, shedding blood, a slaughterer.

What lions circle round his sanctuary!

And sword-blades and spears are his covert.

Fourteen years old—were he to appear

In the darkness of night, I would say, 'Morning has dawned.'

    هُ إِلَيهِ أَرواحُنا تَرتاح

    The eyes have no springtime but his face;

In him our souls find repose.

I have fresh-picked roses from his cheeks, and wine

    From his mouth, and daisies.

Our hearts draw close, even if

The meeting-place is distant and bodies have grown far apart.

Indeed, my letters to him are pages of wishes,

And through them, souls are the messengers between us.
