عَظمhas grown great الداءthe malady وَالدَواand the cure
Immense is my suffering from love;
The passion within me
Great are the malady and the cure.
Is a grave illness without cure
مَنwhoever يَرىsees الحُبlove مَذهَباًa creed
ماتَdied بِالوَجدof longing وَالجَوىand burning grief
Whoever sees love as a creed
Who sees love as a path
Dies of longing and burning grief.
Has died of ecstasy and yearning

May my father, then I, be ransom for a young gazelle
By my father and then myself O Rashaa
Who has dwelt nowhere but in the heart.
Nothing but my heart has harbored love

If his brother saw him,
If his brother were to see him
And he appeared before him, he would fall.
Revealing his passion

He snared my reason with his temple-lock,
It has confused my mind
And with it bent my resolve.
And distorted my determination

He unfurled estrangement; would that he
I wish the separation spread
Had folded up the expanse of separation.
And folded the hardship of estrangement

Alas for my heart! I admonished it
Alas my heart, I prohibited it
Against its passion, but it did not desist.
From its passion, but it disobeyed

قطever ماnot هَمit contemplated أَوor نَوىintended
And of forgetting its love
Never has it imagined or intended
It never thought or formed the intent.
With the garment of his love

Whenever it glimpsed a flash of lightning,
Whenever lightning sparked
It remembered al-Safh and al-Liwa.
The memory of the valley and bending

Or when a dove sang,
Or a pigeon cooed
It nearly died of separation.
Almost ending its cooing
لاno وَقَلبby a heart أَذابَهُhe melted it

No—by a heart he melted
No, and a heart melted by it
And turned away from all others,
Turning away from sanity

And by tears he treated lightly
And tears it belittled
That poured down upon Tuwa:
Spilling incessantly

Beauty does not turn aside
No slyness makes me deviate
At a reproacher's censure of love.
From passionate love

How can one enslaved by love find solace
How can a desperate one find peace
When he has lost his way or gone astray?
When he is lost and confused

Manjaki—his heart
Make his heart forget
Has indeed held every pledge.
Every era it has lived through
فَسَلامso peace مُعَنعَنtransmitted through a chain of narrators
طيبsweet الذكرin remembrance وَالرَوىand retelling
So peace, passed from narrator to narrator,
Farewell to the one whose name
Sweet in remembrance and retelling,
Is good to mention and call

To a prophet and a master
To the Prophet and Master
Who reached the horizon, then stood upright.
Who reached the horizon and ascended
