أَفديهِI would ransom him مِنof رشإٍa young gazelle تَعنوbow لِسَطوَتِهِto his might

I would ransom him—a young gazelle before whose might bow
I ransom him from the evil that yearns for his power
The lions of the lair, who fear the magic of his eyes.
Lion of the lair, he fears the spell of my eyes
وَلاand no مدامةwine إِلّاexcept مِنfrom مَراشِفِهِhis lips
كلّاno indeed وَلاand no الوَردthe roses إِلّاexcept وَردroses خَديهِhis cheeks
And no wine but that from his lips;
And no red rose but from his cheeks
No indeed, nor roses but the roses of his cheeks.
Never the red rose but his rosy cheek
أَحببتI loved مِنfor أَجلِهِhis sake مَنwhoever كانَwas يَشبَهَهُresembling him
حَتّىuntil حَكيتI mirrored بِجِسميwith my body سقمlanguor جفنيهِhis eyelids
For his sake, I loved whoever resembled him,
For his sake I've loved those who resembled him
Until, with my body, I mirrored the languor of his eyelids.
Until my body mimicked the sickness of his lids
