لاnot أَطلُبنَّI shall seek (emphatic) مَراماًa goal لَستُI am not أُدركهُI attain it
لا أَطلُبنَّ مَراماً لَستُ أُدركهُ
وَإِنand even if رَقتrose بيwith me إِلىto أَعلاhighest الذرىthe peaks هِمَميmy aspirations
وَإِن رَقت بي إِلى أَعلا الذرى هِمَمي
I shall never seek a goal I cannot attain,
I do not seek unattainable goals
Even if my aspirations bear me to the highest peaks.
Though my ambitions may rise to the highest heavens
وَلاand not يَلذdelights لِسَمعيto my ear ذكرmention سالِفةa bygone time
وَلا يَلذ لِسَمعي ذكر سالِفة
مِنof النَعيمbliss مَضَتpassed كَالطَيفlike a phantom فيin الحُلمthe dream
مِن النَعيم مَضَت كَالطَيف في الحُلم
Nor does my ear delight in mention of a bygone time
Nor does talk of past pleasures delight my hearing
Of bliss that passed like a phantom in a dream.
Those which have passed like a dream's phantom
ماليwhat is it to me وَعَرضand the breadth الجِنانthe gardens of Paradise السَبعthe seven لَوeven if وَصَفتwere described
مالي وَعَرض الجِنان السَبع لَو وَصَفت
وَلَمand did not يَكُنexist ليَfor me فيهاin them مَوضعa place القَدَمthe foot
وَلَم يَكُن ليَ فيها مَوضع القَدَم
What is the breadth of the seven gardens of Paradise to me, even if described,
What are the seven heavens to me, though they be described
If I have no place in them for my foot?
If my feet find no place in them to stand
