أَبرِّؤُI absolve نَفسيmy soul وَهِيَwhile it امارةever inciting to evil بِهاthrough it
أَبرِّؤُ نَفسي وَهِيَ امارة بِها

يَسِّود صَحفي يَوم تَذهل مُرضع
I absolve my soul, though it ever incites to evil; through it
I absolve myself though my soul urges me on,
My pages are blackened on the day a nursing mother is distracted.
It blackens my pages the day my nurse is inattentive.
وَماand not هِيَit إِلّاexcept حَيةa snake أَنif أَطَعتَهاyou obey it
وَما هِيَ إِلّا حَية أَن أَطَعتَها
وَإِنand if أَناI أَعصيهاdisobey it فَلاthen no شَكdoubt تَلسعit stings
وَإِن أَنا أَعصيها فَلا شَك تَلسع
And it is nothing but a snake if you obey it;
And it is but a snake, if I obey it,
And if I disobey it, it will surely sting.
And if I disobey it, no doubt it will bite.
