عِندَهُwith him فيin الهَوىlove مَكانthe place of الخلالِthe toothpick
His eyelids have made me ill, and my place
His glances made me ill and in low estate,
With him in love is the place of a toothpick.
Yet my place with him in love is lofty still.
لَمdid not يشنmar جِسميmy body النَحولemaciation وَلَكنand yet
زادَنيincreased me الحُبlove رفعةelevation بِاِنتِحاليby claiming me
Emaciation has not marred my body; rather,
My body wastes not through the longings I conceal,
Love has raised my rank by claiming me as its own.
But love hath gained me merit through my suffering.
وَكَفىand is enough ذَلِكَthat الخلالthe toothpick اِفتِخاراًas a source of pride
بِثَناياهُin his front teeth أَوor نَظيرa counterpart مِثاليmy likeness
And that toothpick has glory enough
Suffice it that disgrace for me doth honour bring,
In his front teeth—or so has one resembling me.
To be enfolded there or likened to his like.
