إِذاwhen ماever (emphasis) قُلتI say أَفديهِI would give my life for him حَبيباa beloved
He counts my breaths against me as sins
My breaths count my love for him as sins
Whenever I say I would give my life for him, my beloved.
When I say I'd sacrifice myself for my beloved
وَأَبعدand farthest ماthat يَكونis الودaffection مِنهُfrom him
إِذاwhen ماever (emphasis) باتَhas become مِنto أَمَليmy hope قَريباnear
And affection is farthest from him
And my affection is furthest from him
Whenever he draws near to my hope.
When he stays away from my hopes
حَبيبa beloved كُلَّماwhenever يَلقاهُmeets him صَبٌّa lovesick lover
يَصيرbecomes عَلَيهِover him مَنthe one whom يَهوىhe loves رَقيباa watcher
A beloved—whenever a lovesick lover meets him,
A beloved, whenever faced with hardship
The one he loves becomes a watcher over him.
Becomes for the one who loves a guardian
يَعافhe shuns مَنازلdwellings العُشاقthe lovers كَبراًout of pride
وَلَوand even if فَرشتI paved مَسالكهاtheir paths قُلوباhearts
He shuns lovers' dwellings out of pride,
He shuns the homes of lovers out of arrogance
Even if I paved their paths with hearts.
Even if their paths were paved with hearts
فَلوso if حَملcarried النَسيمthe breeze إِلَيهِto him مِنيfrom me

So if the breeze carried to him from me
If the breeze carried my greetings to him
A greeting, he would stop it from blowing.
It would blow it away and prevent it from reaching him
أَغارI am jealous عَلىover الجَفاcoldness مِنهُfrom him لِغَيريtoward someone other than me
فَلَيتَso would that جَفاهُhis coldness أَضحىbecame ليfor me نَصيباa portion
I am jealous of his coldness toward another;
I'm jealous of his indifference to others
Would that his coldness were my portion!
If only his indifference would become my fortune
وَأَعشَقand I adore أَعيُنthe eyes الرقباءَof the watchers فيهِfor his sake

And for his sake I adore the watchers' eyes,
And I adore the eyes of his watchmen over him
Even if their eyes were filled with flaws.
Even if their eyes were full of faults

وَصَيرand made دَمعthe tears أَجفانيof my eyelids صَبيباa torrent
Love has indeed seized the reins of my heart
Passion has taken my heart's reins
And made my eyelids' tears a torrent.
And made the tears of my eyelids flow
وَماand not أَملتI hoped for فيamong أَهليmy kin نَصيراًa helper
فَكَيفَso how الآنnow أَطلبهُI seek him غَريباa stranger
I have hoped for no helper among my kin;
I've never hoped for aid from my family
So how can I now seek one in a stranger?
So how can I seek it now when I'm a stranger?
وَأَقصِدand I seek أَنthat يَعيدrestore رُواthe beauty شَبابيof my youth

And seek to have my youth's beauty restored
I wish the days of my youth would return
By an age that has left children gray-haired?
When boys were not yet grey-haired from time

Nor are people so unknown to me that
I've never hidden from people until
I should seek milk from vultures today.
Today I seek milk from a dried-up udder

If the fly thinks, I fear it,
If flies think I fear them
For want of my helper, who would be there to answer.
For lack of supporters to drive them away
وَهبand grant أَنيthat I حَكيتresembled الشاةthe sheep ضُعفاًin weakness
فَماso why ليfor me أَحسَبI consider السُنورthe cat ذِيباa wolf
And grant that I resemble a sheep in weakness:
And if I told of the sheep's weakness
Why do I take the cat for a wolf?
Why would I consider the wolf as prey?

Perhaps one day my fortune's wing will be feathered,
Perhaps one day the wings of my fortune may flutter
And I shall set out for a gallant, generous man,
And I will set out bold and impetuous

Honored, with honor gained from one honored,
Precious, gaining from one who is precious
Like a rose that has given the days fragrance.
Like a rose the days have perfumed

If my eye is blessed, even in sleep,
If my eyes find joy even in sleep
With a vision of him—blessed be that eye!
Dreaming of those eyes, blessed are they!

وَفَيضand the flood نَداهُof his bounty قَدindeed أَضحىhas become سَكوباa downpour
And if the clouds withhold their rain, I do not care,
And if the clouds withhold their rain I won't care
While the flood of his bounty has become a downpour.
For their downpour has now become a flood
وَهَلand whether أَبغيI seek وَفيwhile in الناديthe gathering سَناهُhis radiance

طُلوعthe rising الشَمسof the sun أَوor أَخشىI fear المَغيباthe setting
And, with his radiance in the gathering, need I seek
In the presence of his beauty in the gathering
The sun's rising, or fear its setting?
Do I wish for sunrise or fear sunset?
ظَفرتI triumphed بِمَدحِهِthrough praising him فَعَلَوتso I rose قَدراًin standing
وَسَمانيand called me الزَمانTime بِهِthrough it أَديباa man of letters
I triumphed through praising him, and rose in standing;
I succeeded in praising him and thus rose in station
And through it Time called me a man of letters.
And time called me a poet because of him
وَغادرand left رَوضthe garden أَفكاريof my thoughts جَنيّاًripe for harvest
وَصَبرand endured غُصنthe branch آماليof my hopes رَطيباfresh
And left the garden of my thoughts ripe for harvest,
And left a garden in the meadow of my thoughts
And the branch of my hopes endured, still fresh.
With branches of my hopes still fresh

If his noble deeds are recited in a land,
When his achievements are recited in a land
The celestial sphere revolving above it grows enraptured.
The revolving heavens glorify it
