وَغَدَت مَعاهدهُ مَقَرّ البومِ
Generosity died, and its limbs were severed.
Generosity has died, its limbs are severed,
And its haunts became a dwelling place for owls.
And its pacts have become like the owl's abode.

شَح بِغَير مَضَرة أَوشومِ
And we would accept miserliness, if only it were
We would have been content with stinginess, had it been
Miserliness without harm or ill omen.
A stinginess without harm or evil.

قَد أَشبهت قارورة المَحجوم
Our foremost man's bounty to us is coffee,
The gifts we bestowed upon ourselves were coffee,
Which indeed resembles a cupping patient's flask.
That resembled a sealed flask.
