غُصنٌ طابَ في فُؤادي غَرسا
How could one forget, who through all time forgets not,
How could one forget him who is never forgotten through the ages?
A bough whose planting in my heart was sweet?
A bough, sweetly planted in my heart;
بَدرٌa full moon تَمَgrew full تَودyou wish لَوif only كانَتwere الأَنجthe stars (first part)
بَدرٌ تَمَ تَود لَو كانَت الأَنج
م(completion of 'the stars') نَقلاًsweetmeats إِذاwhen تَناوَلَhe partakes of شَمساa sun
م نَقلاً إِذا تَناوَلَ شَمسا
A full moon in its perfection—you wish the stars
A moon grown full—you wish the stars
Were stepping-stones whenever he reached for a sun.
Were sweetmeats when he partakes of a sun.
يَتَمناهُlongs for him كُلevery قَلبheart وَلاyet does not يُدattain (first part)

رك مِن أَخمصي ذاكَ لَمسا
Every heart longs for him—but that one does not win
Every heart longs for him, yet none can win
So much as a touch from the sole of my foot.
Even a touch of that one's soles.
