قَدindeed كُنتُI used to أَسمَعhear بِالهَوىof love فَأُكذّبthen I would disbelieve
قَد كُنتُ أَسمَع بِالهَوى فَأُكذّب
وَأَرىand I would see المُحبthe lover وَماand what يَقولhe says فَأَعجبthen I would marvel
وَأَرى المُحب وَما يَقول فَأَعجب
I used to hear of love and disbelieve;
I would see the lover and marvel at what he said,
حَتىuntil بَليتI was tried بِحُلوهby its sweetness وَبِمُرهand by its bitterness
حَتى بَليت بِحُلوه وَبِمُره
مَنwhoever كانَwas يَنهمcraves الهَوىlove فيجرّبso let him try
مَن كانَ يَنهم الهَوى فيجرّب
Until I was tried by its sweetness and its bitterness.
Whoever craves love, let him try it.
