A thousand greetings to you from one who yearns,

whose heart longing has left ablaze.

A thousand greetings to you at every moment,

following one another like an abundant downpour.

In al-Sham, you were my eye wherever I looked,

and my sun across all horizons.

Since your departure, I have found it nothing but

darkness born of pretence and hypocrisy.

So perhaps you will mention something of my plight

to the great lords, men of preeminence:

Among the pashas is one—none other than myself—

in whose quarters the spider has pitched camp.

And my banner of passion, above my head,

flutters, with not a companion beneath it.

My horses are wishes, and my drum

is wind—rather, a howling, gusting gale.

They assigned me a stipend instead of the zamak,

and charged its payment to destitution.

I see I have an official writ that offers no cure

for sickness, but has set my eyes streaming.

I once disdained falcons as my companions,

    with lions—lions—beneath my portico.

The nightingale of joy has fled from me,

so you see me finding companionship in the water-crow.

How many seas I cleft, sea after sea,

counting them as no more than irrigation channels!

Yet now, if my cloak were touched

by a few drops, they would surely seal my drowning.

Once I was more desired by people than kohl—

you would see me in the black of their pupils.

Misfortunes have left me, in the eyes of Time,

like the sight of a watcher to lovers.

Whenever I shoot an arrow at the target,

I see it in the hoop-playing field.
