Ah, may God preserve Thursday afternoon,

Which made people laugh in a scowling age.

It spread night over the cupbearers, so I could not

See within it except by the light of suns.

That night, sweeter to me than a wink of sleep

Was the full moon there, for he was my companion.

I kept sipping wine from his two eyes,

Which the hand of wishes had blended in goblets.

A young gazelle who seized by force the realm of beauty

And the souls of those with deep-rooted passion.

His glances seem as though they would be fashioned

    Only to seize those souls.

God forbid! I do not deny a love

That delighted the eye with exquisite beauty.
