إِذاwhen جودلتI am challenged in debate سَكَّتنيsilences me اِحتِشاميmy reserve
إِذا جودلت سَكَّتني اِحتِشامي
فَتَحسبنيso they consider me الرعاعthe rabble بِهِbecause of it جَباناa coward
فَتَحسبني الرعاع بِهِ جَبانا
When I am challenged in debate, my reserve silences me;
so the rabble take me for a coward because of it.
وَإِنbut if جَرَدتI unsheathe سَيفيmy sword أَوor لِسانيmy tongue
وَإِن جَرَدت سَيفي أَو لِساني
فَلمthen did not أَترُكI leave لِذيfor one with ضغنa grudge أَماناsafety
فَلم أَترُك لِذي ضغن أَمانا
But if I unsheathe my sword or my tongue,
then I leave no safety for anyone bearing a grudge.
