    في ظِلِها للطَيبات مقيلُ

    ʿArbīl is mistress of carnations and youth;

    in her shade, delights find a noonday resting place.

    She sends me rare gifts of bounty,

    whose arrival the sword of dignity guarantees.

    I settled there before my hair turned gray, while youth

    clothed me in robes of honor, and beauty wore a crown.

    My night there is predawn, and my whole day,

    in its sweetness, as bliss would have it, is late afternoon.

    My boon companions—the north wind’s breezes are the graces

    they possess, and from unfolding conversation comes wine.
