Nothing could surpass what I have endured

    of false promises or threats.

I wish to ward off death, yet hopes

mock my star and my fortunes.

My bewilderment is a stranger’s when night

comes, and an orphan’s on a feast day.

And it is as though the stars have given me

night-long waking, against my will, in place of my slumber.

I have become unable to stir

among people whose hearts are iron.

And my tears are called tears, and yet

they are my soul flowing over my cheeks.

And whenever I invite a beloved’s phantom to visit,

it says, "Our meeting is in the abode of eternity."

Time’s days have brought opposites together for me,

having prepared sorrows for me before I existed:

a watcher but no beloved, and distance

within nearness, and companionship with an envious person.
