How many a singing gray dove have I exchanged songs with
on the two heights in the happy valley.

تَقول أَعد إِذا أَصغيت شَجواً
وَإِنand if أَصغَتshe listens أَقولُI say لَهاto her أَعيديrepeat!
وَإِن أَصغَت أَقولُ لَها أَعيدي
She says, “Repeat,” when I listen in sorrow;
and if she listens, I tell her, “Repeat.”

Then she pities my anguish and speaks words
so beautiful that nothing could improve them.

لِفاتنة أَقلبَكِ مِن حَديد
Ah, O breeze of the predawn hours, say
to an enchantress: “Is your heart made of iron?
أَطَلتِyou prolonged عَذابَهُhis torment وَأَسَأتِand you acted cruelly حَتّىuntil
أَطَلتِ عَذابَهُ وَأَسَأتِ حَتّى

You have prolonged his torment and been cruel, until
today even the envier’s eyelids have wept for him.

The one slain by love of you—you never call him
but his bones answer you from the graves.”
