تَرومseeking للنَفسfor the soul ماwhat يُعللهاconsoles it
Take these lines that have been sent to you,
Seeking for the soul what might console it,
فيwithin طَيthe folds of بيضاa white sheet ظَلَتI have kept مِنout of وَلَهٍyearning
فيكَfor you بِأَيديwith the hands of اللحاظglances أَصقلهاI polish it
Within a white sheet's folds; I have kept, out of longing
For you, polishing it with the hands of my glances.
أَكتُبهاI write it وَالدُموعand the tears تَنقطهاdot it
بِعبرةwith a tear لاnot أَزالI cease أُهملهاI let it flow
I write it, and tears dot it,
With tears I never cease to let flow.
لَوif كانَwas ظَنيmy belief إِذاwhen بصرتyou caught sight بِهاof it
نِيابةas a substitute عَنfor فَميmy mouth تقبلهاyou kiss it
If I thought that, when you caught sight of it,
You would kiss it in place of my mouth,
لَرحتthen I would set out شَوقاًin longing إِلَيكَto you مُنَدرِجاًenfolded
فيwithin طَيِهاits folds وَالنَسيمwhile the breeze يَحملهاcarries it
I would set out for you in longing, enfolded
Within its folds, while the breeze carried it.
