وَدعbade farewell to قَلبيmy heart السُرورjoy وَالفَرحاand gladness
مِنfrom بَعدafter ذاكَthat الغَزالthe gazelle إِذwhen سَنحاhe appeared
My heart has forsaken delight and joy
My heart bade farewell to joy and gladness
ever since that gazelle crossed my path.
Ever since that gazelle came into view.
وَرحتand I became مِنfrom مُقلَتيmy eye مُغتَبِقاًdrinking an evening draught
وَمِنand from لَماهُhis lips’ dark hue قَدalready صرتI became مُصطَبِحاdrinking a morning draught
I have gone on drinking my evening draught from my eyes,
And I took my evening draught from my eye,
and from his dusky lips became a drinker at dawn.
And from his dusky lips I took my morning draught.
يَذكرنيreminds me فيin الدُجىthe darkness مَنازِلهُhis dwellings
إِنif عَنَّappeared بَرقlightning وَطائرand a bird صَدحاsang
In the darkness I am reminded of his dwelling places
In the darkness I am reminded of his dwellings
whenever lightning gleams and a bird breaks into song.
Whenever lightning appears and a bird sings.
وَليand I have فُؤادa heart عَلىin الهَوىlove جلدsteadfast
بِغَيرby other than خَدthe cheek الحِسانthe beauties ماnot جَرَحاwas wounded
And mine is a heart steadfast against passion,
And I have a heart steadfast in love,
never wounded save by the cheeks of the fair.
Wounded by nothing but the cheeks of beauties.
