Far from home, with neither companion nor friends,

And reproaching fate, which reproach cannot appease.

His dwellings in al-Sham have become deserted,

Resembling his body when the heart departed from it.

His children are held hostage among enemies,

And their tears stream from their overwhelming anguish.

Enemies whose malice awakens when they sleep,

So their security is fear, and their peace is war.

I wronged myself; all the blame is mine,

By setting out; fate bears no blame for what it did.

I was deceived by people whose promises are dust,

Passing like rainless clouds, though they call them clouds.

They answer seekers of their bounty with mere claims,

And if they saw a copper coin on the ground, they would fall upon it.

And never before have I seen a patient whose physician

Is deficient in experience and does not know what medicine is.

He stretches out his ropes to catch praise from me,

Upon treachery, with falsehood knotted at its ends.

And people are found only where they seek bounty,

And birds are found only where they pick up grain.

    I returned, and God's aid is a man's guardian,

And my steed does not stumble, nor does my fire die down.
