وَمِنand from طينةٍclay كُلall الجُسومthe bodies تَكوَّنَتwere formed
وَمِن طينةٍ كُل الجُسوم تَكوَّنَت
فَيَعلَمso knows هَذاthis حاذقa skilled person وَخَبيرُand an expert
فَيَعلَم هَذا حاذق وَخَبيرُ
And from clay all bodies were formed;
And from one clay all bodies were formed
so the skilled and the experienced know this.
So this is known to the keen and the wise
فَمِنهاso from it ذَواتbeings قَذّرتwere sullied فَتدنستand so became defiled
فَمِنها ذَوات قَذّرت فَتدنست
وَمِنهاand from it ذَواتbeings قَدستwere sanctified فَعَبيرand thus fragrance
وَمِنها ذَوات قَدست فَعَبير
So some beings of that clay were sullied and became defiled;
From it came those that fouled and were soiled
and some beings of it were sanctified, and so are fragrance.
And from it came those sanctified and pure
وَماand not هَذِهِthese الأَيّامthe days إِلّاexcept مَراحِلٌstages
وَما هَذِهِ الأَيّام إِلّا مَراحِلٌ
وَفيand at مُنتَهاهاtheir end جَنةParadise وَسَعيرand blazing fire
وَفي مُنتَهاها جَنة وَسَعير
And these days are nothing but stages,
And these days are but stages
and at their end lie Paradise and blazing fire.
With Paradise and Hellfire in the end
إِذاif كانَتare الأَقدارthe destinies تَجريrun their course بِماaccording to what تَشاthey will
إِذا كانَت الأَقدار تَجري بِما تَشا
فَقُلthen tell ليَto me ماwhat صَنعيmy action وَأَينَand where أَسيرُI go
فَقُل ليَ ما صَنعي وَأَينَ أَسيرُ
If destinies run their course as they will,
If fates flow as they desire
then tell me: what can I do, and where shall I go?
Tell me what can I do and where can I go
وَلَكنَّand yet حُسنgoodness of الظَنّthe opinion يُسكِنcalms رَوعَتيmy fear
وَلَكنَّ حُسن الظَنّ يُسكِن رَوعَتي
وَيُخبِرنيand tells me إِنَّthat الكَريمthe Generous One غَفورُever-forgiving
وَيُخبِرني إِنَّ الكَريم غَفورُ
And yet hopeful trust calms my fear,
But good faith calms my fears
and tells me that the Generous One is ever-forgiving.
And tells me the Generous One forgives
