هَواهُ طِرف الخَطَر
And a gazelle-like youth—I was made to mount
And passion makes me ride
the steed of peril by love for him.
The edge of danger,

يَهزو بِضوءِ القَمَر
Slender-waisted and radiant,
Exultant, joyous,
he mocks the light of the moon.
Mocking by moonlight.

يَكادُ أَن يَشرَبَهُ

إِذا تَبَدى نَظَري
It almost drinks him in—
My gaze would drink it in
my gaze, whenever he appears.
Whene'er it shows itself.

عَلى فِراش السَهَر
I spend the night restless over him,
I spend the night restless
upon the bed of sleeplessness,
On wakefulness's bed,

لِصَولَجان الفكر
as though my mind were a ball
As though my mind's a ball
for the polo mallet of thought.
For thought's snowman.
