And a garden where water winds beneath its shade,

Like a startled serpent or an unsheathed sword.

    Crimson anemones gleam there, resembling

A drunken man's eyes, lined with antimony kohl.

And dewdrops rain there, so you imagine them

A scattered necklace upon a bed of emerald.

And its tender, delightful basil seems like

The first beard down appearing on a graceful youth's cheek.

There a slender youth gave me the wine of his sweet saliva,

So, with that wine, I could no longer tell today from tomorrow.

And I spent the night thinking the pomegranate blossoms in its trees

Were stars of agate in a sky of chrysolite,

Until the day's sun appeared, as though it were

A warrior's shield adorned with gold.
