Forever, for your sake, I battle the steeds of separation,
I shall always struggle in you, the steeds of purpose
And safeguard my hours against parting.
And I protect my times from separation
وَأَظنand I think أَنthat الدَهرTime لَيسَis not بِموحشيone who leaves me desolate

And I think that Time will not leave me desolate,
And I think that time is not desolate with me
And that it is not gentle with its sons.
And that it is not kind to its sons

But the days have an unjust decree,
But days have an unjust rule
Keener in edge than a hammer-forged sword.
I spent my youth subjected to a ruthless fate

O burnisher of the blunted mind, and radiance of the
O polish of tired imagination and elegance of
Brief life, and the beloved's visit,
Short life and visit of the beloved

You brought me into being among mortals after my nothingness,
You brought me into existence from my nothingness in the land
And carried me away, while fire falls short of my burning.
And moved me while fire is below my burning
أُمسيI pass the evening كَماas أَمسىpassed the evening السَليمthe snake-bitten one مسهداًsleepless

لاnot بِالطَليقas one set free أَرىI see myself وَلاnor المَوثوقone bound
I pass the evening sleepless, like one bitten by a snake,
I become in the evening as the unharmed became, a bed
Seeing myself as neither free nor bound.
I see neither the released nor the confined
شَوقيmy longing إِلَيكfor you وَإِنeven though تَقاربwas close in time عَهدَناour last meeting

My longing for you, though our last meeting was recent,
My longing for you, though our pact is recent
Is my longing for the days of radiant youth.
Is longing for the pact of graceful youth
