وَيَومand a day طويناwe passed أَبرديهِits two cool periods: morning and evening بِرَوضةin a garden
بِهاin it الزَهرthe flowers زَهرstars وَالخَمائلand the groves أَفلاكُcelestial spheres
And one day we spent its morning and evening in a garden,
Where the flowers were stars and the groves celestial spheres.
وَمِنand from أَوجهfaces الغُرthe fair الخَرائدthe shy maidens قَدindeed بَدَتappeared

And from the faces of the fair maidens there appeared
Full moons, and from those tresses, deep darkness.
وَبِتناand we spent the night لَناfor us سَكرانٍan intoxicated one مِنfrom خَمرwine ريقِهِhis saliva
وَذاتand a woman wearing وِشاحa sash لِلنُهىfor reason فَهِيَso she is أَشراكsnares
And we spent the night with one drunk on the wine of his saliva,
And a sash-clad woman—a snare for reason.
وَقَدand indeed نَظمتناhas strung us together لِلرضىfor contentment راحةthe palm المُنىthe wishes
فَنَحنُso we لِآلpearls وَالمَودةand affection أَسلاكthreads
And the hand of wishes had strung us together for contentment:
So we are pearls, and affection the threads.
