A melting liver, and a trembling tear,
And a turning toward the sanctuary, and yearning;
وَتَذللand self-abasement فيat كُلevery بابdoor مَذَلةof humiliation
إِذsince عَزَّhas become scarce مَنone who يُرجىis looked to لِأَمرfor a matter يطرقcomes knocking
And self-abasement at every door of humiliation,
Since rare is one to turn to when a need comes knocking.

I kept the eyelids of my hopes awake, watching for
The sun of success—but its eastern horizon was barred.

I once feared no lions, for all their dread majesty;
And now I quake at the buzzing of a fly.

And I think my fortune has not betrayed me deliberately,
But, in its ignorance, it makes no distinction.

The nobility of my lineage made it imagine that I
Am like aloeswood, whose fragrance emerges when it is burned.
كَمhow often قَدindeed عشقتI have loved وَلَوand if أَكونI were مُوَفَقاًrightly guided

How often I have loved! Yet, had I been rightly guided,
I would have found nothing in creation worthy of love.

So when I tested water, though it is our life,
I found it was the blue enemy.

And I began asking after a generous man; I was told:
Today none but misers are created.

Each of them, if he thought I had come to him
In need, would feel his heart pound.

Arrogant, with his right hand outstretched,
Hoping for bounty, while we seek someone who gives alms.

I have none but the King of Kings, the One whose
Door is knocked upon by the breaths of all creatures.

The Benefactor, the Bestower—exalted is His majesty—
Gives, withholds from whomever He wills, and provides.

إِنthat لاnot تَروجfind a market بِضاعَتيmy wares وَتَحَققواand they became certain
My foes wished, as youth's bough had withered,
That my wares should find no market; and they felt sure of it.

They said, 'Your clothes are worn out.' I said, 'Begone!'
My good hope in my Creator never wears out.

I am a nightingale whose home is the spreading tree of His bounty,
And my neck is collared with bounty.
