يَكادُ يُذيب الروح فَرطَ اِحتِجابِهِ
A beloved whom the king guards beneath his domes;
My love, protected by the king beneath his domes
His deep seclusion almost melts the soul.
His veil melts my soul, so heavy it engulfs

فَتسكر أَفكاري بِذكر رِضابِهِ
Hopes send his words circling through my hearing,
His words swirl fancies round my hearing
So my thoughts grow drunk at the mention of his saliva.
That my thoughts grow drunk on his rhythms

He turns the earth's dust into musk and ambergris
He makes the earth's dust into musk and amber
When, in gratitude, I kiss the hem of his robes.
If I kiss his clothes in thanks for his grace

فَيَسبق تَسليمي بَرَد جَوابِهِ
He speaks to me with a glance of taking my lifeblood,
With a glance, he speaks, taking my heart
So my surrender precedes the coolness of his reply.
My surrender outpaced by his brisk retort
