وَعَطفك ذا لين وَقَلبك قاسيا
How long must I see you angry, forgetful of our covenant?
How long will you appear angry, forgetful of the pledge,
Your form is all suppleness, yet your heart is hard.
With your frame so supple, yet your heart so hard?

By your life, grant me one draught of your lips’ nectar,
By your life, grant me a draught of your sweet saliva;
for the drinking companion has withheld my cup from me.
For the drinking companion has withheld my cup from me.

I am not one who gave youth all its due,
And I am not one who has paid youth its due,
and the hands of gray age have seized me by the head.
Though the hands of gray hair have already seized my head.

تَذكر لَيلات فَدَتها حَواسيا
It has left me trembling like a branch, in anguish,
And I was left quivering like a branch by the anguish
as I remember nights—may all my senses be their ransom—
Of recalling nights—may my senses be their ransom—
