With my soul—nay, with my noble forefathers—I would ransom

a fawn whom the hands of wine have toyed with.

Whenever he smiles, revealing hail-white teeth, we fold

our hearts around the burning heat of thirst.

Were it not for the down on his cheeks, we would not have known

that the full moon rises veiled.

He toys with the patience of a man beset by sorrows,

whose tears are unrestrained and whose love-madness is renowned.

The morning clouds' downpour races his tears,

and the doves' lament echoes his grief.

When he glimpsed lightning over the protected grounds, he recalled

the days of pleasure, their order harmonious,

and a spacious palace, broad on every side,

where he trailed the skirts of passion.

And the hand of youthful dalliance had strung for us

necklaces of union upon the thread of desire.

And my unceasing tears had watered our union,

and the rainclouds' returning showers greeted our days together.
