Damascus was blessed by the rising of al-Shaʿrānī,

The pole of the sciences, Abū al-Suʿūd the Second,

Whose bounty in both wests, and whose renown

In both easts, have traveled with the caravan riders.

A sun upon a celestial sphere of faith.

Seeking God's aid in his onslaughts,

He slays doom with the keen blades of benevolence.

In his train, to my family and homelands.

By an appointed fate that seized my reins.

From your compassion, my lord, I earnestly hope

For a prayer for me, its pillars firmly built,

And aid for my little son, for he has become

Like a tiny sparrow among eagles.

Misfortunes have assailed him, so his eye

Is bloodied at the tear-ducts, ceaselessly streaming.

He asks the caravan riders about me whenever

They reach Damascus, with the tongues of sorrow.

And the two Nayrabs, over the haunts of our fellowship,

Weep together with the tears of the pools.

And the nightingale says, 'O my yearning for

Those whose sorrow saddened me before love did!'

They were in Jilliq—before they were buffeted by

The wind of separation—like roses upon the branches.

My lord, O son of those who recover the wronged man's fine,

Justly, from the hand of oppression:

Do not forget your servant wherever you travel, for he

Seeks refuge in you from the calamities of time.

For the body recovers from its sickness through treatment,

And the cure of souls is the friendship of close companions.
