مَسيّجٌ وَرد خَديهِ بِريحانِ
A bān-tree branch in robes of lilies,
A branch of euphorbia dressed in a garment of lilies,
The roses of his cheeks hedged with basil.
His rosy cheeks fenced about with sweet basil.

لا يُصدر الطَرف عَنهُ غَير ظَمآنِ
A rose of beauty, whose features bewilder the gaze;
A rose in beauty's mantle imprisoned,
The gaze never leaves him except athirst.
That sends forth naught but the thirsty glance of desire.

His speech wins people's hearts;
His speech, that captivates all hearts,
You find him in the pupil of every person's eye.
Is met from every fellow by his fellow.

Wine's only pleasure is that, for us, it be
No joy in life unless to us it come
Passed round from his hands amid a garden.
Twined in his fingers mid the garden close.

Rose-colored: he clothed it, when he diluted it,
A rosebud he, when first its sheen uncloses,
In a tint from the roses of his cheeks—that culprit.
Dyed with the rosy red that streaks his cheek the while.

On the hills, cup in hand, he matches
Facing him with the wine-cup in his hand,
Roses with roses, and basil with basil.
A rose instead of rose, and basil-spray for basil-spray.

A full moon—when they veil him from our eyes,
If they should veil the full moon from our eyes,
Our eyes exchange moist pearls for pure gold.
They’d give us in exchange a single rainy night.
