A stranger, though I am among my clan and kin.

I see plenty barred on every side by drought.

And the truest of those I give my pure affection is a dissembler.

And because of him my collar's playground lies in the blade's grip.

And I have indeed tested my age and its people,

By my life, until I came to recoil from my own shadow.

    شَدائدها الجَلّاء تَعجب مِن حَملي

    And I have battled every ordeal the days have dealt;

Their mighty hardships marvel at my endurance.

I have been afflicted with people; whenever I test them,

I prefer walking barefoot to wearing my sandal.

And I never knew that a lion in its lair

Could fear and dread an assault from the weakest ants.

Poverty would never have come near me, had I

Been content with stinginess, as the base are.

If my merit keeps me from what I seek,

I would tear down with ignorance's hands what my merit built.

You assail us, O Time, waging war,

As though you were free of blame for killing the noble.

I speak, but no one else [listens], as though I

Write what I dictate on the water's pages.

And how many a beloved whose promise I never secured—

If he does not kill by rejection, he kills by humiliation.

And if his phantom passes by chance before my eyes,

I spend the night as separation's companion, on a night of union.

May my time be no more, since it toys with me as

It wishes, though it has never seen anyone more discerning than one like me.

Nor did it know that justice had settled in Jilliq,

And my solace, who utterly dispels everyone's loneliness—

Exalted in dignity, the chosen one and father of bounty,

And the sun of guidance, who leads to the straightest paths.

He stood like security's [unclear], so death was routed,

And terrors came to dwell in the precincts of humiliation.

    لَهُ النعمة العُظمى عَلى كُل مَن يُدلي

    His is the highest rank, above every rank;

His is the greatest bounty to everyone who makes an appeal.

His is a disposition like the breeze, and a palm

That sentences avarice and withholding to death.

    وَكَم مِن غَريب الدار عَن أَهلِهِ يُسلى

    And men like me have grown great at his door;

And many a stranger, far from home and family, is consoled.

    أَسود بِهِ فَخراً عَلى كُل مِن قَبلي

    And my meeting with him in Rum was an elevation;

Through him I rise in glory above all who came before me.

He has enslaved praise; even his banner

Is indeed praised by the tongues of unanimous accord.

So may he endure in the world, a helper to its people,

Bringing division to enemies and restoring unity.

For he is the one looked to in every calamity:

So he gives without reproach and consoles without weariness.
