Who will bring me that bewitching young oryx?
Who is he that allures me,
He captivates minds with a drowsy gaze.
Ensnaring minds with his gaze and smile?

He sways, intoxicated by coquetry, as though he were
Swaying drunkenly with love's sweet ache,
A bough of the bān tree in the garden of our gathering.
Like a willow branch amid our gathering's aisle.
لَوif لَمnot أَرددI avert عَنهُfrom him أَجفانيmy eyelids حَياًout of modesty
لَتناهيتهُunclear as written; probably 'would have vied for him' إِذاwhen بَداhe appeared أَجفانيmy eyelids
Had I not averted my eyes from him out of modesty,
Had I not lowered my eyes decorously,
My eyes would have vied for him when he appeared (reading uncertain).
I'd have drowned in his gaze beguiling.

وَتَنبهand awaken الأَشواقthe longings لِلأَشجانto the sorrows
A gazelle fawn whose movements stir my burning passions
His graceful movements stir my soul,
And awaken longing to sorrow.
Kindling longings in my heart beguiling.
قَدindeed كانَwas يُمكنpossible أَنthat اصرحI speak openly بِأسمِهِof his name
لَكنهُbut it عقدbound الغَرامlove لِسانيmy tongue
I could indeed have spoken his name openly,
I might have uttered his name plainly,
But love bound my tongue.
But passion has bound my tongue in its coil.
