صَحَproved true فيهِin it حَديثtale عَيشيَmy life لَماwhen
صَحَ فيهِ حَديث عَيشيَ لَما
مَرَّpassed يَعتلlanguishing فيin الرِياضthe gardens النَسيمُthe breeze
مَرَّ يَعتل في الرِياض النَسيمُ
There the tale of my life proved true, when
My life's tale was set right when
the breeze passed, languishing, through the gardens.
The breeze blew gently through the gardens.
نَظمتناstrung us together أَيديhands المُنىwishes فَكَأناso, as though we were
نَظمتنا أَيدي المُنى فَكَأنا
لِنُحورfor the necks الوِدادaffection عقدa necklace نَظيمُfinely strung
لِنُحور الوِداد عقد نَظيمُ
The hands of wishes strung us together, as though we were
Our fates were woven by hands of affection, so we
a finely strung necklace for the necks of affection.
Became like necklaces of love and esteem.
ظَلتI remained نَشوانintoxicated إِذwhen تَنبهُawoke شَوقيmy longing
ظَلت نَشوان إِذ تَنبهُ شَوقي
وَعَذوليand my reproacher وَإِنand even if أَفاقcame to نؤَمُّdrowsy
وَعَذولي وَإِن أَفاق نؤَمُّ
I remained intoxicated when my longing awoke,
My passion and longing remained
and my reproacher, though he came to, was drowsy.
Though sorrow departed and joy returned.
وَغَديرand a pool أَرقmore delicate مِنthan زَمَنa time اللَهdelight (continued next line)
وَغَدير أَرق مِن زَمَن اللَه
وcompletion of 'delight' عَلَيهِabove it طَيرbirds الرَجاءِhope يَحومُhover
و عَلَيهِ طَير الرَجاءِ يَحومُ
And a pool more delicate than a time of delight,
It was a stream of sleeplessness in eras gone by,
above which the birds of hope hover.
With birds of hope hovering over it.
فَهُوَso it كَالأَيمlike a serpent فيin إِنسيابgliding تبدىappeared
فَهُوَ كَالأَيم في إِنسياب تبدى
وَعَليهِand upon it مِنof الحبابbubbles رَقومُmarkings
وَعَليهِ مِن الحباب رَقومُ
So it appeared like a serpent in its gliding,
It flows like a torrent revealed,
and upon it lay markings made of bubbles.
With foam of love upon it.
وَأخلّاءand friends كَالنُجومlike stars فَمنهاso among them
وَأخلّاء كَالنُجوم فَمنها
ليfor me سُعودauspicious stars وَللأَعاديand for the enemies رجومُmissiles
لي سُعود وَللأَعادي رجومُ
And friends like stars—among them
And friends like stars - among them
are lucky stars for me, and missiles for the enemies.
Are my fortune and others, my defense.
حازَhe gained مِنّاfrom us وَصفa description أَيسَرthe least مجدglory
حازَ مِنّا وَصف أَيسَر مجد
قَدalready حَواهُhas encompassed it المَنطوقwhat is explicitly stated وَالمَفهومُand what is implied
قَد حَواهُ المَنطوق وَالمَفهومُ
He gained from us a description of the least of his glory,
He attained from me the easiest praise -
already encompassed by what is stated and what is implied.
Captured by speech and meaning.
قَلَدَتنيgarlanded me يَداهُhis two hands نعماًfavors فَدَهريso my age
قَلَدَتني يَداهُ نعماً فَدَهري
مَعwith بَنيهِits sons بشكرهاwith gratitude for them لاnot يَقومُfulfills
مَع بَنيهِ بشكرها لا يَقومُ
His hands garlanded me with favors; so my age,
His hands adorned me with favors, so my life
together with its sons, cannot offer due thanks for them.
Along with his children, cannot repay.
