أَمسىhas now become شَبابُكَyour youth عَنّاfrom us الغَضُّtender قَدalready حَسَراreceded
لَيتَwould that الشَبابَyouth جَديدٌrenewed كالَّذيlike that which عَبَراpassed
Your tender youth has now receded from us.
The exuberance of your youth has faded away from us
Would that youth were renewed, like the youth that passed.
If only youth could be made new again like the past that has gone by
إِنَّindeed الشَبابَyouth وَأَيّاماًand days لَهُbelonging to it سَلَفَتpassed before
وَلَّىdeparted وَلَمand did not أَقضِI satisfy مِنof لَذّاتِهِits pleasures وَطَراa desire
Indeed, youth and its days gone by
Youth and the days belonging to it slipped away
Have departed, and I have not had my fill of its pleasures.
It departed before I could fully enjoy its pleasures
أَودىperished الشَبابُyouth وَأَمسَتand has become عَنكَfrom you نازِحَةًdistant
جُملٌJuml وَبُتَّand was severed جَديدُfresh الحَبلِthe cord فانبَتَراso it snapped
Youth has perished, and far from you now is
Youth bid farewell, and withdrew from you
Juml; the fresh cord was severed, so it snapped.
Like camels whose ropes had snapped, scattered and separated
فَاصبِرso be patient فَماfor there is nothing لكَfor you إِلاexcept أَنto تَهيمَpine بِهاfor her
وَإِنand if تُهَيِّجكَstir you أَطلالٌruins فَتَدَّكِرَاthen you remember
So be patient: nothing remains for you but to pine for her.
So be patient, for you have no recourse but to yearn for it
And if ruins stir you, then you remember.
And if ruins stir you up, reminisce and remember
أَمسَىhe is now وَقَدand already شابَgrew gray لاnot يَنسَىhe forgets تَذَكُّرَهاremembering her
لاno بَلrather يَزيدُincreases إِذاwhen ماemphasis اسمٌa name لَهاof hers ذُكِرَاwas mentioned
Now, though grown gray, he never ceases to remember her;
It grew dark, and he aged, unable to forget remembering it
No—rather, his love grows whenever her name is mentioned.
Rather increasing when a name of it was mentioned
أَنthat لاnot يُغَيِّرَhe should alter وُدّاًaffection فِيin شَبيبَتِهِhis youth
لِلمالِكيَّةِfor al-Mālikiyyah منhe who قَدalready غَيَّرchanged الشُّعَرَاthe hair
That he should not alter the love he bore in his youth
That he would not change a love in his youth
For al-Mālikiyyah—he whose hair has changed.
For the Maliki faith, he who had altered his hair
