شأَتكَgrieved you المَنازِلُthe dwellings بِالأَبرَقِat al-Abraq
دَوارِسَworn away كالعَينِlike the letter ʿayn فيon المُهرَقthe parchment
The dwellings at al-Abraq have grieved you—
Your dwellings outshine the lightning
Worn away, like the letter ʿayn on parchment.
With windows like eyes in a veil
لآلِbelonging to the household of جَميلَةJamila قَدalready أَخلقَتhave fallen into decay
وَمَهماand whatever يَطُلgrows long عَهدُهُits age يُخلِقgrows worn
Belonging to Jamila's household, they have fallen into decay;
For a beautiful reason were you created
And whatever endures long grows worn.
And whatever the years, more beauty unveiled
فَإِنso if يَقُلِsay الناسُthe people ليof me عاشِقٌa lover
فَأَينَthen where الَّذيthe one who هوَhe لَمdid not يَعشَقlove
So if people call me a lover,
If people ask am I in love
Then where is he who has never loved
Then who is there untouched by desire?
وَلَمand did not يَبكِweep over نؤياًa tent-trench عَلىwith عَبرَةٍa tear
بِداءِfrom the sickness of الصَبابَةِardent longing والمَعلَقand attachment
Nor wept over a tent-trench in tears,
Who hasn't shed tears in the darkness
From the sickness of ardent longing and attachment?
O'er the heart lost in youth set afire
