O kindler of fire, kindle it, for it has
A radiance that stirs the sorrow-stricken lover’s heart.
A radiance that excites the fervent lover’s heart

A fire whose glow shone when kindled for us—
A fire whose radiance shines when it is kindled for us
A woman of Saʿd, whose coy charm cures sickness.
A blissful one whose guiding light heals sickness
وَلائِمٍand many a reproacher لامَنيblamed me فيهاfor her فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him

And many a reproacher blamed me for her, so I told him:
To one blaming me, I said: It has cured
What I endure because of her has wasted my body and my blood.
My body which I sacrificed to it, and my blood
فَماso not طَرِبتَyou were stirred لِشَجوٍby sorrow كُنتَyou used to تَأمَلُهُhope for it
وَلاnor تَأَمَّلتَyou gazed upon تِلكَthat الدارَthe dwelling مِنfrom أُمَمِnearby
So you have not been stirred by a sorrow you once hoped for,
You were not stirred by a longing you hoped for
Nor gazed upon that dwelling from nearby.
Nor did you long for that house from nations

Your nights at Khākh will not return
Your nights are not returning with disappointment
As you knew them, nor the days at Dhū Salam.
As you knew, nor are days of peace
