أَلاah! لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether إِلىto أُمِّUmm (mother of) جَحدَرٍJahdar
سَبيلٌa way فَأَمّاbut as for الصَبرُpatience عَنهاapart from her فَلاthen no صَبراpatience
Ah, if only I knew—is there to Umm Jahdar
Oh, would that I knew! Is there a way to Umm Jandar's abode?
a way? As for patience without her, I have none.
As for patience without her, there is no patience!
وَإِنّيand indeed I لأَستَنشيI certainly seek out الحَديثَconversation لأَجلِهاon her account
لأَسمَعَso that I may hear عَنهاabout her وَهيَwhile she is نازِحَةٌfar away ذِكراa mention
And I do seek out conversation on her account,
I busy myself with talk only for her sake,
to hear mention of her while she is far away.
That I may hear news of her as she journey's on.
وَأَعجَبُand the most wondrous دارٍhouse دارُهاher house غَيرَexcept أَنَّنيthat I
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle أَتَيتُI come to الدَارَthe house تَرجِعُنيit sends me back صِفراempty-handed
And hers is the most wondrous house; yet for me,
And I find her home the most wondrous of homes, though
whenever I come to the house, it sends me back empty-handed.
When I come to her abode it sends me back empty.
عَشِيَّةَat evening ألويI wrap بِالرِداءِwith the cloak عَلىover الحَشاthe breast
كَأَنّas though الحَشاthe breast مِنfrom دونِهِbeneath it مُشعَلٌablaze جَمراembers
At evening, I wrap my cloak about my breast,
In the evening I wrap myself in my cloak by the enclosure
as though my breast beneath it were ablaze with embers.
As if without it the enclosure were flaming embers.
