أَفالآنَso, is it now? لَمَّاwhen بَايَعواthey pledged allegiance لِضَلالَةٍto misguidance
دَعَوتyou called فَهَلاthen why not قَبلearlier إِذwhen لَمdid not يُبايِعُواthey pledge allegiance
Is it only now, when they pledged allegiance to error,
Now that they have pledged allegiance to misguidance
That you called? Why not earlier, when they had not pledged?
Why did you not accept when they had not yet pledged?
وَمِنand from دُونbefore مَاwhat حاوَلتyou attempted مِنof نكثbreaking عَهدهمtheir covenant
وأمكَand has come for you مَوتٌdeath ياO ابنَson of دَحمةَDahmah ناقِعُinescapable
And in the way of your attempt to break their covenant,
And without what I attempted of their violation of the covenant
And inescapable death has come for you, O son of Dahmah.
And your death is certain, O son of Dahma the fallen
فَذُقso taste غِبَّthe aftermath of مَاwhat قَدalready جِئتَyou have done أنكَthat you are ضَلَّةone astray
إِلَىfor جُرمِthe wrongdoing of مَاwhat لاقَيتَyou encountered عَطشانthirsty جائِعُhungry
So taste the aftermath of what you have done: you are astray,
So taste the bitterness of what you have come to, for you are lost
Thirsty and hungry for the wrongdoing you have encountered.
To the crime of what you have met, thirsty and hungry
كَفَرتyou were ungrateful for الذِيwhat أَسدَواthey bestowed إِلَيكto you وَسَدَّدُواand they directed
مِنَof الحُسنِkindness وَالنُعمَىand favor فَخَدُّكso your cheek ضارِعُhumbled
You were ungrateful for what they bestowed and directed to you—
You disbelieved the one who granted you favor and guided you
Of kindness and favor; so your cheek is humbled.
With goodness and blessing, yet your cheek fell down begging
هَلare ...? انتَyou أَميرَCommander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful فَإِنَّنِيfor indeed I
بِوُدِّكَwith your affection مِنinstead of ودّthe affection of البَرِيَّةِhumankind قانِعُcontent
Are you the Commander of the Faithful? For I
Are you the commander of the faithful? For I
Am content with your affection instead of all humankind’s.
Am content with your love over the love of mankind

Completing an earlier reward and a favor
Completing a reward already passed and a favor
You have shown us, for favors are beyond counting.
That we have with you, since favors are not counted

And how many a hostile enemy, full of rancor,
And how many aggressive enemies with aggression
And one who listens in secret to what you are doing.
And eavesdroppers of the unseen, what will you do?
