إِنّيindeed I لآمُلُI surely hope أَنthat تَدنوshe draws near وَإِنand even if بَعُدَتshe has grown distant
والشّيءُand the thing يؤمَلُis hoped أَنthat يَدنوit draws near وَإِنand even if بَعُداit has grown distant
Indeed, I hope she will draw near, though she has grown distant.
I hope that you will come closer even if you are far away
And one hopes a thing will draw near, however distant it has grown.
For a thing is hoped to come closer even if distant
أَبغَضتُI have hated كُلَّevery بِلادٍland كُنتُI used to آلَفُهاfeel at home in it
فَماso not أُلائِمُI find congenial إِلاexcept أَرضَهاher land بَلَداa country
I have come to hate every land I once felt at home in;
I have hated every country that I was once familiar with
so I find no country congenial except her land.
So I blame none but its land as a homeland
ياO لَلرِّجالِmen, to the rescue! لمَقتولٍfor a slain man بِلاwithout تِرَةٍan offense warranting vengeance
لاnot يأخُذونَthey exact لَهُfor him عَقلاًblood money وَلاand not قَوداretaliatory killing
O men, help one slain though he had done no wrong,
Oh what men, killed without retaliation
for whom they exact neither blood money nor retaliation.
They take neither reason nor retribution for him
إِنif قَرُبَتshe draws near لَمnot يُفِقhe regains his senses عَنهاfrom her وَإِنand if بَعُدَتshe is far away
تَقَطَّعَتwas torn apart نَفسُهُhis soul مِنfrom حُبِّهاlove for her قِدَداinto shreds
If she draws near, he does not recover from his passion for her; and if she is far away,
If she came close, he would not regain consciousness, and if she went far
his soul is torn to shreds by love for her.
His soul would be torn apart from love of her
ماnever تذكرُis mentioned الدَهرَever ليto me سُعدىSu'da وإِنand even if نَزَحَتshe has gone far away
إِلاexcept that تَرَقرَقَshimmered ماءُwater العَينِof the eye فاطَّرَداthen it flowed on
Never is Su'da mentioned to me, though she has gone far away,
Time does not remind me of happiness with you, but if it went away
without tears shimmering in my eyes and then streaming down.
The tears flowed down my eyes ceaselessly
وَلاand never قَرَأتُI read كِتاباًa letter مِنكِfrom you يَبلُغُنيthat reaches me
إِلّاexcept that تَنَفَّستُI breathed out مِنfrom وَجدٍlonging بِكُمfor you all صُعَداdeep sighs
Nor have I read a letter from you that reaches me,
And I read no letter from you that reached me
without breathing deep sighs of longing for you.
Except I sighed from anguish for you continuously
وَقَدand indeed بَدَتappeared ليَto me مِنfrom سُعدىSu'da مُعاتَبَةٌa reproach
أَمسَىbecame by evening وَأَضحىand became by morning بِهاthrough it جَدّيmy fortune بِكُمwith you all سَعِداfortunate
And a reproach from Su'da has come to me,
And happiness had shown displeasure with me
through which my fortune with you turned favorable, evening and morning.
I greeted it morning and evening with you, happily
وَلَوand if أُعاتِبُI reproach ذاone with حِقدٍa grudge قَتَلتُI had killed لَهُof his
نَفساًa life مُعاتَبَتيmy reproaching إِيّاكِyou ماnot حَقداhe bore a grudge
And were I to reproach a resentful man from whom I had taken
And if I reproach one with hatred, I would have killed
a life, as I reproach you, he would bear no grudge.
My soul, reproaching you, not with hatred
