أَقولُI say لَمّاwhen التَقَيناwe met وَهيَwhile she صادِفَةٌturning away
عَنّيfrom me لِيَهنَكِmay he bring you joy مَنthe one whom تُدنينَهُyou bring him close دونِيinstead of me
I said when we met, as she turned away
When we met by chance, I said,
From me: may the one you bring close instead of me give you joy.
Keep away from me, spare yourself my trouble,
إِنّيindeed, I سَأَمنَحُكِI shall grant you الهجرانَestrangement مُعتَزِماًfirmly resolved
مِنwithout غَيرِany بُغضٍhatred لَعَلَّperhaps الهَجرَparting يُسلينيwill console me
Indeed, I shall grant you estrangement, firmly resolved,
I've decided to shun you, though not from hate,
Without hatred; perhaps parting will console me.
Perhaps this estrangement will bring me solace.
وَمُثنِياًand praising رَجعَthe echo of أَيّامٍdays لَناof ours سَلَفَتthat have passed
سَقياًmay it be watered وَرَعياًand tended لِذاكَfor that الدِينِway of life مِنof دِينِa way of life
And praising the echo of days we shared long ago:
But I pine for days we spent together before,
May that way of life be watered and tended—what a way of life!
When paying our dues to that worthy faith.
