إِلاexcept البَنانُthe fingertips وَإِلاand except الأَعيُنُthe eyes السُجُمُstreaming with tears
إِلا البَنانُ وَإِلا الأَعيُنُ السُجُمُ
I bade them farewell, and nothing answered me
I bid them farewell, with nothing to bring me back
Except fingertips and eyes streaming with tears.
Except the cheeks and the languid eyes.

When they wished to speak to me then, there arose
When they wish my words were his,
Tears barring the way, and the words drew back.
Tears spring forth instead, and speech halts.

Propped up, their necks already drooping,
Leaning figures, their talks now skewed,
And they had no pain but the touch of love.
With nothing left but the pangs of passion’s sting.
