لَقَدindeed سَلاceased pining كُلُّevery صَبٍّlovesick lover أَوor قَضَىfulfilled وَطَراًa desire
وَماand not سَلَوتُI ceased pining وَماand not قَضَّيتُI fulfilled أَوطارِيmy desires
Every lovesick lover has indeed ceased pining or fulfilled a desire.
Long has each youthful lover drained love's bitter cup,
But I have not ceased pining, nor fulfilled my desires.
While I have neither drained the draught nor given up.
أَضمَرتُI concealed ذاكَthat زَماناًfor a time ثُمَّthen بُحتُI disclosed بِهِit (of which I spoke)
فَزادَنيso increased for me سَقماًsickness بوحيmy disclosure وَإِضمارِيand my concealment
I concealed that for a time, then disclosed it.
I hid my secret for a time, but then revealed
So my disclosure and concealment increased my sickness.
My tale of love - which did my sickness but augment.
أَخفَيتُI hid فيwithin العُرفِthe familiar هَذاthis النُّكرَthe unfamiliar ذَلِكُمُthat (addressing you all)
فَصَرَّحَso spoke openly الوَجدُlonging عَنof عُرفيmy acknowledgment وَإِنكارِيand my denial
I hid this unfamiliar thing within the familiar—that very thing.
I kept my grief concealed and hid within my heart,
Then longing laid bare my acknowledgment and my denial.
But longing plain revealed both grief and my resistance.
