ماwhat ضَرَّharmed جيرانَناour neighbors إِذِwhen انتَجَعواthey sought fresh pasture
لَوif انَّهُمthat they قَبلَbefore بَينِهِمtheir departure رَبَعُواthey lingered
What harm would it have done our neighbors, when they sought fresh pasture,
had they lingered before their departure?
أَحمَواthey forbade عَلىto عاشِقٍa lover زيارَتَهُhis visit
فَهوَso he بِهِجرانِat the estrangement of بَينِهِمtheir parting فَظِعُdistraught
They denied a lover his visits,
so he is distraught at the estrangement their parting brings.
وَهوَand he كأَنَّas though الهيامَmadness خالَطَهُhad possessed him
وَماyet no بِهِin him غَيرother than حُبِّهاlove of her رَدَعُailment
And he seems as though madness had possessed him,
yet nothing ails him but love of her.
كَأَنَّas though لُبنىLubna صَبيرُa white cloud-bank غادِيَةٍa morning raincloud
أَوor دُميَةٌa statue زُيِّنَتwere adorned بِهاwith it البيَعُthe churches
Lubna is like a white bank of morning rainclouds,
or a statue with which churches were adorned.
اللَهُGod بَينيbetween me وَبَينَand between قَيِّمِهاher guardian
يَفِرُّhe flees عَنّيfrom me بِهاwith her وَأتَّبِعُand I follow
May God judge between me and her guardian:
he flees from me with her, and I follow.
