أَإِنis it because نادَىcalled out هَديلاًa cooing call ذاتَat Dhat فَلجٍFalj
مَعَwith الإِشراقِsunrise فيon فَنَنٍa bough حَمامُdoves
Is it because cooing rang out at Dhat Falj,
from doves upon a bough at sunrise,
ظَلِلتَyou kept on كَأَنَّas though دَمعَكَyour tears دُرُّpearls سِلكٍa thread
هَوَىfell نَسَقاًin succession وَأَسلَمَهُand released it النِظامُthe string
that you kept weeping, your tears like pearls upon a thread,
falling in succession, released by their string?
تَمُوتُyou die تَشَوُّقاًfrom longing طَرَباًin passionate agitation وَتَحيىand live
وَأَنتَwhile you are جَوٍlovesick بِدائِكَby your affliction مُستَهامُcrazed with love
You die of longing and passion, and live again,
while you are lovesick, crazed by your affliction.
كَأَنَّكَas though you مِنfrom تَذَكُّرِremembering أُمِّUmm (mother of) حَفصٍHafs
وَحَبلُand the cord of وصالِهاunion with her خَلَقٌworn-out رِمامُrotten
At the memory of Umm Hafs, you seem—
the cord of union with her worn and rotten—
صَريعُone laid low مُدامَةٍwine غَلَبَتprevailed عَلَيهِover him
تَمُوتُdie لَهاbecause of it المَفاصِلُthe joints والعِظامُand the bones
a man felled by wine that has overpowered him,
his joints and bones deadened by it.
وَأَنَّىand how far مِنfrom دِيارِكَyour dwellings أُمُّUmm (mother of) حَفصٍHafs
سَقىmay water بَلَداًa land تَحُلُّshe dwells بِهِin it الغَمامُthe clouds
And how far from your dwellings is Umm Hafs!
May the clouds water the land where she dwells.
أَحُلُّI dwell النَعفَal-Na'f (a slope) مِنof أُحُدٍUhud وَأَدنىand the nearest
مَساكِنِهاher dwellings الشُبَيكَةُal-Shubayka أَوor سَنامُSanam
I dwell at al-Na'f by Uhud, while the nearest
of her dwellings is al-Shubayka or Sanam.
سَلامُpeace اللَهِof God ياO مَطَرٌMatar عَلَيهاupon her
وَلَيسَand is not عَلَيكَupon you ياO مَطَرُMatar السَلامُpeace
God's peace be upon her, O Matar,
but no peace be upon you, O Matar.
وَلاand may not غَفَرَforgive الإِلَهُGod لِمُنكِحيهاfor those who married her off
ذُنوبَهُمُtheir sins وَإِنeven if صَلّواthey pray وَصامواand they fast
Nor may God forgive those who gave her in marriage
their sins, even if they pray and fast.
فَإِنfor if يَكُنِbe النِكاحُmarriage أَحَلَّhas made lawful شَيئاًanything
فَإِنَّthen indeed نِكاحَهاmarrying her مَطَرٌMatar حَرامُforbidden
For if marriage has made anything lawful,
then Matar's marriage to her is forbidden.
كَأَنَّas though المالِكينَthose who control نِكاحَthe marriage of سَلمىSalma
غَداةَon the morning يَرومُهاhe seeks her مَطَرٌMatar نِيامُasleep
It is as though those who control Salma's marriage
were asleep the morning Matar sought her.
فَلَوfor if لَمnot يُنكِحواthey marry off إِلاexcept كَفيّاًa worthy match
لَكانَthen would have been كَفيَّهاher worthy match المَلِكُthe king الهُمامُthe magnanimous
For had they married her only to a worthy match,
her match would have been the magnanimous king.
فَطَلّقهاso divorce her فَلَستَfor you are not لَهاfor her بِأَهلٍworthy
وَإِلاor else شَقَّwill cleave مَفرِقَكَthe crown of your head الحُسامُthe keen sword
So divorce her, for you are not worthy of her,
or else the keen sword will cleave the crown of your head.
