Do not feel safe from my breaking with you because you see my ardent love,
Do not expect constancy from me, though now we are friends,
Even if ages have passed in unclouded affection.
For time's changes often friendship's fervor end.

وَالرّأيُ يُصرَفُ والأَهواءُ أَطوارُ
The heart was so named only because of its changefulness;
The heart was named inconstant for its restless tide;
And judgment shifts, and passions have their phases.
Opinion shifts, desires have phases wide.

خانوا فَأَضحوا إِلى الهِجرانِ قَد صاروا
How many lovers, before me and before you,
How many dear ones in the days before us two
Proved faithless and thus ended in estrangement.
Grew tired of loving and estranged withdrew!
