O Salam, you have me in your power, so be lenient.
A freeborn, noble man may hold power and still show mercy.

Show favor to a captive whose suffering you have prolonged,
In fetters in your keeping, while captives are set free.

To you, the deceitful and the sincere are alike.

And when I complained to Salama of my love for her,
She said, “Are you serious about this, or are you joking?”
