وَحَيثُand where تَقَشَّىshed their shells بَيضُهُits eggs المُتَفَلِّقُsplitting open
Leave the people while they dwell in Qurāḍim's valley,
and where its splitting eggs have shed their shells.
فَإِنَّكَfor you لَوif قارَبتَyou came close أَوor قُلتَyou said شُبهَةًa plausible claim
لِذِيfor the possessor of الحَقِّthe right فيهاin it والمُخاصِمِand the disputant مَعلَقُa foothold
For had you come near the truth, or offered a plausible claim
in which the rightful claimant and his opponent had a foothold,
عَذَرناكَwe would have excused you أَوor قُلناwe would have said صَدَقتَyou spoke truly وَإِنَّماand only
يُصَدَّقُis believed بِالأَقوالِin statements مَنwhoever كانَhas been يَصدُقُspeaking truth
we would have excused you or said, 'You told the truth'; yet only
one who has been truthful is believed in what he says.
سَتأبىwill refuse بَنوthe sons of عَمرٍوʿAmr عَلَيكَyou وَيَنتَميand is traced
لَهُمto them حَسَبٌancestral honor فيin جِذمِthe stock of غَسّانَGhassān مُعرِقُdeep-rooted
The sons of ʿAmr will reject you, and theirs
is a noble lineage rooted deep in Ghassān's stock.
فَإِنَّكَfor you لاneither عَمراًʿAmr أَباكَyour father حَفِظتَهُyou kept faith with him
وَلاnor النَضرَal-Naḍr إِنif ضَيَّعتَyou forsake شَيخَكَyour elder تَلحَقُwill you join
For you have neither kept faith with ʿAmr, your father,
nor will you join al-Naḍr if you forsake your elder.
وَلَمand did not تُدرِكِyou reach القَومَthe people الَّذينَwhom طَلَبتَهُمyou sought them
فَكُنتَso you were كَماjust as كانَwas السقاءُthe waterskin المُعَلَّقُhanging
And you have not reached the people whom you sought,
so you were like the waterskin hanging
بِجِذمَةِon a stump of ساقٍa trunk لَيسَis not مِنهُfrom it لِحاؤُهاits bark
وَلَمand not يَكُwas عَنهاfrom it قَلبُهُits heart يَتَعَلَّقُhanging
on a tree-stump whose bark is no kin to it,
nor had its heart ever hung from that stump.
فَأَصبَحتَso you became كالمُهريقِlike one pouring away فَضلَةَthe remainder of مائِهِhis water
لِبادِيfor the appearance of سَرابٍa mirage بالمَلاon the open plain يَتَرَقرَقُshimmering
So you have become like one who pours away his remaining water
for a mirage shimmering into view on the open plain.
