وَلَكِنand yet أَبيmy father لَوif قَدindeed سَأَلتَyou asked وَجَدتَهُyou found him
تَوَسَّطَoccupied the heart of مِنهاamong them العِزَّglory وَالحَسَبَand ancestral honor الضَخماgreat
But had you asked, you would have found my father
at the heart of their glory and great ancestral honor.
وَلَستَand you are not بِلاقٍmeeting سَيِّداًa chief سادَled مالِكاًMalik
فَتَنسُبُهُthen you trace his lineage إِلاexcept أَباًa father ليَof mine أَوor عَمّاa paternal uncle
And no chief you meet who has led Malik
will prove, when you trace his lineage, anything but a father or paternal uncle of mine.
سَتَعلَمُyou will learn إِنif عادَيتَنيyou make an enemy of me فَقعَO truffle قَرقَرٍof a level plain
أَمالاًwhether wealth أَفَدتَyou gained لاno أَباfather لَكَfor you أَوor عُدماdestitution
You will learn, if you make an enemy of me, O truffle of a level plain,
whether you have gained wealth—may you have no father!—or destitution.
لَقَدindeed أَبقَتِhave left الأَيّامُthe days مِنّيof me وَحَرسُهاand their watch
لأَعدائِناfor our enemies ثُكلاًbereavement وحُسّادِناand for our enviers رَغماhumiliation
Indeed, the days and their watch have left enough of me
to bereave our enemies and humiliate our enviers.
