How enslaved your heart is to her! You never remember her

Without tears welling in your eyes or streaming down.

O Salm, would that the tongue with which you speak

Had been cut out before I suffered through loving you.

People whose company I keep reproach me over you,

But I care not whether blame flies or falls.

I call my heart to forsake her, and it follows me,

Until, when I say, 'This heart is true,' it turns back.

I cannot break away from loving her,

Unless love does to me more than it has done.

How many a lowly man I have come to follow for her sake,

Though, if my heart forgot her, he would become my follower.

    وَحَبُّ شَيءٍ إِلى الإِنسانِ ما مُنِعا

    And her refusal made me more consumed with love;

And what a person loves best is what is denied.
