يَرىhe considers حَسرةًanguish أَنthat تَصقِبَshould be near الدارُthe dwelling مَرَّةًonce
وَلَوand even if حالَintervened بابٌa door دُونهاbefore it وَسُتورُand curtains
He finds it anguish that the dwelling should be near, even once,
even if a door and curtains stand before it.
هَجَرتُI stayed away فَقالَso said الناسُthe people مَاwhat بَالُthe reason for هَجرِهاforsaking her
وَزُرتُand I visited فَقالُواso they said مَاnot يَزالُhe ceases يَزورُhe visits
I stayed away, and people said, 'Why forsake her?'
I visited, and they said, 'He never stops visiting.'
وَمَاand not كُنتُI was زَوَّاراًa frequent visitor وَلَكِنَّbut ذَاone possessed of الهَوىlove
إِذاif لَمnot يُزَرhe is visited لاno بُدَّescape أَنthat سَيزورُhe will visit
I was no frequent visitor, but a man in love,
if he is not visited, must surely visit.
وَقَدand indeed أَنكَرُواthey disapproved بَعدَafter اعتِرافٍacknowledgment زِيارَتِيmy visit
وَقَدand indeed وَغِرَتhave seethed with rancor فِيهاover it عَليَّagainst me صُدورُhearts
They have disapproved of my visits after once accepting them,
and hearts have seethed against me over them.
وَشَطَّتand grew distant دِيارٌdwellings بَعدafter قُربٍnearness بِأَهلِهاwith their people
وَعادَتand came anew لَهُمfor them بَعدَafter الأُمورِthe affairs أُمورُother affairs
Dwellings once near have grown distant, taking their people with them,
and new affairs have followed old affairs for them.
وَلَستُand I am not بِآتٍcoming أَهلَهاher family غَيرother than زَائِرٍa visitor
وَلاand not زَائِراًvisiting إِلاexcept عَلَيَّagainst me نَصيرُa supporter
And I do not come to her family except as a visitor,
nor do I visit without someone siding against me.
وَقَدand indeed جَهِدَhave striven الواشونَthe talebearers كَيماso that أُطيعهمI obey them
بِهجرَتِهاby abandoning her إِنِّيindeed I إِذَنthen لَصَبورُsurely very patient
The talebearers have striven to make me obey them
by abandoning her—then I would be patient indeed!
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمُواthey know وَاستَيقَنواand are certain أَنَّthat سُخطَهُمtheir anger
عَلَيَّagainst me جَميعاًall together فيbeside رِضاكَyour approval يَسيرُslight
They know and are certain that their anger
against me, all together, is slight beside your approval.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتshe knows أَنthat لَنwill never أطيعَI obey بِصَرمِهاby breaking with her
مَقالَةَthe words of واشٍa talebearer ماas long as أَقامَremains standing ثَبيرُThabir
She knows that I will never obey, by breaking with her,
a talebearer's words, as long as Thabir stands.
وَأَنand that لَيسَthere is not لِلودِّfor the love الَّذيwhich كَانَwas بَينناbetween us
وَلَوand even if سحطتslays أُخرَىthe last of المَنونfate's calamities ظُهورُdisclosure
And that, for the love that was between us,
there shall be no disclosure, even if fate's last calamity slays me.
لَعَمرِby the life of أَبيهاher father أَنthat كِتمانَconcealing سِرِّهاher secret
لَهاfor her فِيgiven الَّذيwhat عِندِيI hold لَهاfor her لَيَسيرُindeed easy
By her father's life, keeping her secret
is easy indeed for her sake, given what I feel for her.
وَمَاand not زِلتI have ceased فِيin الكِتمانِconcealment أكنيI refer indirectly بِغَيرِهاthrough someone other than her
فَينجدُso it goes upland ظَنُّthe conjecture of الناسِthe people وَيَغورُand descends into the lowlands
I have kept it hidden, speaking of another in her place,
so people's guesses climb the uplands and descend into the lowlands.
أُحَدِّثُI say أنيthat I قَدalready سَلَوتُhave ceased pining وَكُلَّماand whenever
تَذَكَّرتُهاI remember her كَانَwas الفُؤادُthe heart يَطيرُtaking flight
I say that I have ceased to pine; yet whenever
I remember her, my heart takes flight.
يَقولونَthey say أظهِرmake plain صَرمَهاbreaking with her وَاجتِنابَهاand avoiding her
أَلاsurely وصلهاunion with her لِلوَاصِلينَfor those who join her طَهورُa purification
They say, 'Make plain your break with her and your avoidance of her.'
Surely union with her purifies those who keep that bond.
أَبَىhas refused اللَّهGod أَنthat تَلقَىyou encounter لِوَصلِكin your love غِرَّةٌdeceit
كَمَاas بَعضsome وَصلِunion with الغانِياتِbeautiful women غُرورُdeception
God would not let deceit be found in your love,
as some unions with beautiful women prove deceptive.
تُصيبُshe attains الهُدَىright guidance فِيin حُكمِهاher judgment غَيرexcept أَنَّهاthat she
إِذاحَكَمَتwhen she passes حُكماًa judgment عَلَيَّon me تَجورُshe is unjust
She is right in her judgments, except that
when she passes judgment on me, she is unjust.
